Final Project Research: My Website


It's ALIVE! I can't believe I actually have a running website. I feel very proud that I decided to author it myself using code! I challenged myself to make a customizable site because I found that websites like square-space or wix.com weren't doing the trick for me in being customizable in the way I like, so I looked at many portfolio websites to get inspired. 

 After my initial research, I found Gin Lane on One-Page Love, web-designer and fellow Meagan, Meagan Fisher's Owltastic, and web and video agency: Symodd. These three websites inspired the structure of a site, the contents, and the design. All of these websites had similar communication objectives of servicing to the graphic design industries. They provided detailed samples of work and abilities.

Gin Lane was the first website I found that inspired me by their simple layout. It has a one-page structure with the gradients of color slightly changing as you scroll down to see their work sample. I used of ombre effect as well on my website, however, I ended up using the structure of Symodd in the end. However, some people might dislike of the one-page scroll for everything on a site, so I found Meagan Fisher's website, and I like the grid structure of her work. 

Her website is an inspiration because it shows her quirky personality in its branding which I thought it was necessary as a designer. Yet her work it's superb, and she goes through in detail of how she develops her projects. Overall her website inspires me to be me and how to showcase your work well. I decided to use the domain nutmeggem because it's also my handle for some of my social media accounts. She also uses a variety of gradients and coincidently the same typeface I use for my header on my website. She also had an email with her contact information instead of a form, so I did a similar layout.

The next website that I based my website behavior and the structure was Symodd. I enjoyed the vibrant ombre color and how symodd structured multiple pages like a one-page scroll with scrolling up effect. 

 My website can be considered a hybrid of all these websites. I want to still have some flexibility to add more to my site for any future work that I want to showcase. Coding a website is versatile, and I can control how my work is showcased which is essential for me too.

     If there is one thing you should know about me is that I am obsessed with organization and stationary items. One of my favorite pen and highlighter brands is Stabilo . It's website is pretty rad too.       They take pride in showcasing all of their products. When you view any type of product,for instance all the highlighters , it shows the actual size of the products, which I tested. They have a playful web design. It has a good mix of interaction between viewer and design.  When you hoover over the Stabilo Boss Original highlighter color , for example, the background changes color to the hoovered color. Web Typography

Choosing typography for your print design or website can be a little daunting sometimes. On top of that, choosing the best combinations of typography can add to the layer of frustration. At this moment, I'm deciding whether or not to change the font for this blog post. Anyhow, the choice of typography is part of the designing process. I'm fortunate enough to have great web typography resources. Some of my favorite resources are Google Fonts and 50 Font Combinations . I know Google fonts will work on all platforms and all design mediums and the 50 Font Combinations are all google fonts paired up with one simple blog. I think web typography is beginning to mature to due to other technologies advances in retina displays and the option of web browsers. In addition, smartphones have powerful displays which in turn will have better displays of fonts.  With @font-face declaration, you don't have to use "web-safe" fonts. Can I get a resource?

I'm now in the final semester at MiraCosta, so I am gearing up for graphic design and marketing jobs. What that entails is looking at A LOT of examples for my portfolio and my graphic design 3 classes. I'm looking at examples of website, fonts, layouts, and the list goes on and on. The one thing I notice that most website provides is the WHAT, but they never explain WHY it is a good example of [insert technical term here]. There is where Moo.com comes in. Moo.com has an inspiration gallery where it provides both great examples of product use and the explanation of why they are great examples. Check it out. One my favorite example is What is the big idea? Below are some of the examples of the media company that took a creative approach to advertising a service - typically an intangible idea.
